Grower Profile

Since 1971, our family at The Country Mill has grown apples and pumpkins in mid-Michigan. Most of our orchards have semi-dwarf trees, with new dwarf (short) trees being planted. We may hire as many as 15 seasonal workers to pick apples and pumpkins. Additionally, our farm market and cider mill offer fringe benefits and possibilities of indoor labor during bad weather such as grading and packing.

We have three separate, licensed, modern housing units. Housing is near the orchard so little time is wasted going to and from work. We make every effort to provide a clean and well-maintained home for workers. Each housing unit has a washer, dryer, refrigerator, stove, and oven.

Our season may start as early as August 1st and possibly run until early November. For both apples and pumpkins, the pay scale is based on a piece rate per box that is competitive in the area. In our area, there are migrant health services, day care services and a Wal-Mart with Western Union only five miles from orchard and camp.
