Grower Profile
Clark Farms
Hart, Michigan
Oceana County

Clark Farms has been in the farming business since 1971. Asparagus and hay are primarily grown.

Work: Workers are hired for asparagus season. Workers pick primarily asparagus "cuts and tips", but do some "orienting" for fresh market. Clark Farms has been fortunate to hire the same 10 workers, however in 2009 an additional family of 5 workers will be needed, increasing the number of employees to 15.

Season: The season usually runs from early May to late June.

Wages: Workers are paid by the pound (piece rate), increasing 1¢ per pound each week, being careful not to fall below minimum wage.

Housing: approved housing is provided. Clark Farms has a nice licensed duplex for two families (16 people total) and additional housing is rented from a neighbor. All housing requires workers to pay utilities.

Clark Farms carry Worker's Compensation Insurance; however they are not subject to pay unemployment benefits.
